Vol. 19, No. 30; Thursday, March 29, 2018
Our first finisher today was Sophie. It was Sophie's first time visiting us, but she's an experienced parkrunner who made it look very easy. Junior parkrun will be taking place at Alexandra Park over the Christmas holidays, with our next runs happening at the usual time 9am on Sundays the 23rd, 30th December and 6th of January.
We had a great turn out at Alexandra Park this morning for a dry and bright, if slightly chilly, junior parkrun. Sebastian was presented with his half marathon wristband. We were really happy to celebrate his achievement as Sebastian and his family have been great supporters of the event over the past months.
Not sure he was as happy as we were! Our first finisher today was Billy who joined us for the first time. His excellent time was even more impressive when you discover he completed a very fast 5km at Stretford Parkrun yesterday morning. We had three juniors who completed their first ever parkrun this morning - Marianne, Beth and Dominic, welcome to the club! Inaya and Maria very kindly made the volunteers friendship bracelets to thank them.
How lovely is that? Now we have our own wristband club! An extra announcement: we are looking for some artwork to help us promote the event, if some of our runners would like to get creative for us. It could be of you or your friends and family taking part, the park, the finish line or one of our marshals giving out high fives. We'd like to share your artwork on our social media and we might even print our favourite on a flyer.
You can email your pictures to us at alexandramossside-juniorsoffice parkrun. Thank you guys, we know you'll do us proud as always. It was a slightly overcast morning in Manchester, but the parkrun weather fairy was quite kind and paused at 9am.
A crowd of intrepid juniors were not put off by the weather and arrived in a selection of very nice raincoats, which lead us to wonder why they don't make more colourful waterproofs for adults. Oliver and William, our intrepid Duke of Edinburgh awarders again lead an excellent warm up and flummoxed many by asking us to windmill one arm forwards and one arm backwards.
Huge congratulations to Oliver who was presented with his Half Marathon wristband and then went on to achieve a PB. Here he is wearing his wristband with pride. Congratulations also to Molly who also smashed her junior parkrun PB this morning. Her dad Noel was volunteering as a marshal so he didn't get to see her strong finish, but her superb performance was noted by some of the other volunteers.
We had some new faces join us this morning, which we LOVE.
We are quite close to having had different registered participants complete our course since we started, so if you thinking of tackling Alexandra Park but haven't yet, come down soon! After last weeks downpour it was a beautiful morning for our 10th event and a hardcore bunch of half-term half-pints came to Alexandra Park to take part.
Huge kudos to Tess who stepped in at the last minute to be our Run Director. Our first male finisher today was Joshua, who is a bit of a parkrun tourist and was running our course for the first time. It was his best time for a junior run - when we say our course is flat and fast we really mean it! Our first female finisher, for the second week in a row was Jemma. This was only her second ever parkrun and she smashed her previous time so we can't wait to see how she does in the future. Big thanks for the Waqar family for taking part and for sharing delicious snacks with everyone at the finish line.
And thanks also to Vivienne and Rosa for helping to spread the word and bring ing their pals to take part.
Next week it will be a Halloween parkrun special. Grab this opportunity to get some extra use out of your spooky costume and come along in fancy dress. Plus Jared Eaton who was super helpful and returned some cones we'd forgotten about. This week it was parkrun's 14th birthday and over 5 million people internationally are now registered to take part. This weekend was a landmark for us because we presented our first ever wristband.
Congratulations to Rosa who has now completed a Half Marathon distance at junior parkrun. Brilliant job, Rosa! Rewards are available to junior participants when they achieve the following: Half marathon club 11 runs : blue wristband and certificate Marathon club 21 runs : green wristband and certificate Ultra marathon club 50 runs : orange wristband and certificate We're looking forward to being able to congratulate more juniors soon.
A less exciting landmark this weekend was that we lost a finish token for the first time. If anyone finds number 21 in a pocket please let us know. We saw some excellent animal impersonations as we pretended to be horses, flamingos, meercats, frogs, pigeons and monkeys to warm up on a bright, but quite chilly autumnal morning. Project "fill October's roster is still ongoing. It's looking quite healthy but we could always do with some more help. Give us a shout if you can lend a hand on a Sunday morning.
Our first two finishers - Sebastian and Anna - both achieved new personal bests.
