The annual State of Small Business survey gives us a broader understanding of the challenges and opportunities Main Street American small businesses face today. The survey showcases the economic and political optimism that this country is experiencing and demonstrates that anyone from any corner of the United States, from any economic and socio-economic background, can become their own boss and thrive in the current economic state.

This year, we decided to partner with LendingClub to expand our sample size to more than 2, small business owners. Their expertise in connecting the online marketplace of borrowers and investors to deliver affordable access to credit was one of the many reasons we decided they would be a best fit for our survey this year. Nilssen: This survey found women are opening up businesses in the following industries:.

  1. Der Mörder in uns (German Edition).
  2. Ebook So, You Want To Start A Business?: 8 Steps To Take Before Making The Leap .

Those who decided to become their own boss rated their overall happiness an average of eight out of a scale of Nilssen: The most common ones we see are corporate janitorial services, pack and ship facilities, print shops and so on.

Nilssen: Our target market are brick and mortar, Main Street America small businesses. How does that work for someone who wants to start a business this year?

Nilssen: With k business financing formally known as Rollovers for Business Start-ups, or ROBS , you can use funds from an IRA or k to invest in a small business or franchise without taking a taxable distribution or getting a loan. By starting your business debt-free, it removes the burden of having to make monthly payments as you launch your business, allowing you to be profitable sooner. And, the whole process can be as quick as three weeks, so someone who wants to start a business this year has plenty of time to do so.

Domzalski: What is something people don't understand about starting their own business that they probably should? Another thing folks may not realize at first is that buying a franchise can be a smart way to become a business owner without being completely on your own — you enjoy the luxury of a proven system and receive support throughout. Besides that, we have customers come to us all the time inquiring how and where do they even start when it comes to financing and starting their own business.

As a result, we developed a step list for entrepreneurs and small business owners to refer to when kicking their business off the ground. Some of the recommendations include:. Nilssen: Right now, there is a pro-business, less regulatory environment in Washington, D. The economy is seeing solid growth with unemployment remaining low. Domzalski: Outside of tax preparation, what other services are outsourced by small business owners? Nilssen: Our survey showed that tax preparation, CPA, payroll, and bookkeeping in that order are some of the top services that small business owners outsource to third-party vendors. Which is no surprise. In fact, our mission is to increase the number of people that succeed in small business.

In addition to funding, we introduce our clients to best-in-class service providers to help simplify the number of decisions they must make at launch. Friend Reviews. This is an instant classic and I rarely say that. The book covers the basics of starting a business and includes many good questions to ask yourself when starting. For instance, writing down business processes and simplifying them so that it's easy to hire employees to do execute on those processes is something this book recommends.

It also really drives the point home that customer focus is key. Feb 22, Ranjit rated it really liked it Shelves: business. Very practical and well structured knowledge. There are specific numbers and advices that you'll rarely find in other books on the topic. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is that the summary at the end of some chapters is redundant.

As if it was a copy pasted summary of the whole chapter. Jan 02, Erin rated it really liked it Shelves: non-fiction , business.

This book is a solid business book for anyone who is thinking of starting a business or already owns or invests in small businesses. It devotes the first 6 chapters to giving practical and useful advice and rules for starting a business, such as making sure your business "pencils" meaning that it will be profitable and determining your "burn rate" how much capital you have and how long you can go until you will run out of money. I found this first section to be the most interesting.

    • The next This book is a solid business book for anyone who is thinking of starting a business or already owns or invests in small businesses. The next 2 chapters cover managing your business and your people. Obviously this is hugely important and a big reason why many businesses fail, but I found much of the rules and advice to be overly simplistic and trite. Suggestions such as making your employees feel like a family at work seem pretty obvious. The final chapter covers managing growth of your business. This too is very important and the author notes that this is often when businesses cannot sustain themselves.

However, it felt overloaded with too much information. Overall the book was very solid with some helpful advice that I will definitely go back to if I decide to start a business. It was somewhat dry but I think that is to be expected. Feb 19, Kat rated it it was ok Shelves: entrepreneurship.

This nook was a quick read. The layout was simple and the authors did a good job at summarizing. However, this book is strictly for people interested in starting a small business selling products. If you are interested in starting a service business or freelancing this is not the best book. It was loaded with math and all sorts of equations before it even got to the chapter on pricing your product. Jun 28, Nimish added it.
