Bob Shaw made his name writing excruciatingly well thought out science fiction of what used to be called the "hard" variety - there had to be full rationale behind everything, otherwise it would simply have been anything-goes fantasy.

To complement this approach his writing thyle was extremely concise, economic, punchy, and whilst demonstrating a huge grasp of literacy, his house style remained flawlessly dry and serious, and rarely delved into the "comedy" genre except for the occasional short story. This is the follow-up to "Who Goes Here? It comes across much like a TV sitcom, in that nothing is wasted, things that happen early on, just small details, return later for clarification and are the centre of some bizarre joke. Shaw's comedy is very visual, if he hadn't been a sci fi writer who knows he may have written material for stand-up comedians or even attempted a sitcom, something along the "One Foot In The Grave" style.
Subtlety rarely gets a look in as he is economical with his writing stryle, so the humour has to come right out and slap you in the face.

And, like all the best humourists, he repeats what works best, and when you think you might just get annoyed if he repeats it again, he repeats it with a bit of a twist. Sadly his comedy short stories sank without trace - you'll find them buried in his numerous anrthologies - but these two novels fully deserve to be dusted off and re-read from time to time.
I've just got this as an e-book, having lost the original paperback eons ago, and it seems as fresh and sustaining as it did all those years ago. Amazon now have a full bevy of apps for every type of mobile or smart device so you can read it anywhere, not just on a kindle or at your computer. Inspired follow-up to "Who Goes Here" that I never knew existed.
At the end of "Who Goes Here" possiblty the funniest piece of sci-fi ever written , our hero had become an Oscar - an invulnerable, God-like being. Peace was bored. From here, his life takes a series of unexpected turns and quickly dissolves into the same level of inspired lunacy as the first book. I never knew this book existed. I am so glad I found it. Very funny. One of my favourite books. Light but insightful reading. During his imprisonment, he befriends Platon Karatev, a wise peasant. He is later freed from the French and promptly falls ill. After recovering, he marries Natasha, and they have four children together. Nikolay weds Mary, and the two enjoy a happy married life. War and Peace is known for its realism, something Tolstoy achieved through intensive research.
He visited battlefields, read history books on the Napoleonic Wars , and drew on real historical events to create a novel of living history. Tolstoy had originally planned to write a novel centring on the Decembrists , whose revolution in against the tsar attempted to end autocratic rule in Russia. The Decembrists failed, however, and those who were spared execution were sent to Siberia.
Tolstoy wanted to depict a Decembrist , now old, returning from exile. As Tolstoy wrote and revised, however, the novel evolved into the War and Peace known today—a novel that takes place more than a decade before the Decembrist movement. Some historians argue that this invasion was the event that metamorphosed into the Decembrist movement years later. Many of the family names used in War and Peace are slight alterations of real names Tolstoy had encountered in his life—a deliberate strategy intended to make the novel feel familiar to the Russians who read it.
Tolstoy also created the majority of his characters with his own family members in mind; for example, his sister-in-law, Tanya, was the inspiration behind Natasha. When he was 26 years old, he fought in the Crimean War , which he also wrote about in three sketches describing, graphically, his experiences during the Siege of Sevastopol published — Tolstoy wrote War and Peace over the course of six years.
Tolstoy continued to write, and he also hired the prominent artist Mikhail Bashilov to illustrate the novel. By three volumes had been released and were selling rapidly. Tolstoy finished three more volumes between and Sofya had copied several drafts, all by hand. All told, War and Peace filled more than 1, pages when first published.
